Definition of ActivNet: ActivNet describes our
Active Network 'Active' a state of action as opposed to
being passive or quiescent 'Network' the interaction or
engagement of communication with others for mutual assistance or
support
ActivNet
connects you with the World
.jpg) Earth's
environs are complex and inter-related and the boundaries infinite.
From the depths of the Earth to the stars above it is constantly
dynamic, therefore, every input or output can have far reaching
ramifications. To control the amount of input and output requires World
participation. And this starts with you ! ActivNet wont dazzle
you with words and descriptions you are unfamiliar with, but at the
same time, we will also cater for those that require more detail. The
problem with our environment being so infinite is that there are so
many components of it, that make it difficult to understand. It is this
understanding that leads to participation, therefore, it is imperative
that people understand , so they too can participate. Quite often most
tend to think of their environment locally, which is all well and good
... but tend to forget the whole picture.
 At ActivNet we examine
all the forces at work. Are there other planets that can sustain life?
Are the Oceans home to as much life as the Land? What organisations are
doing what and where? What damage is being done and where... and what
can you do to help? Where are some places to visit off the beaten
track? And how long has the environment been studied? |

How many times have you bought something & known where the resource originated?
Too many times we dont take this into consideration.
The tribes of the Amazon know!
Rogue militant groups and killers hired by illegal loggers &
pastoralists are burning villages and killing villagers in their quest
for timber and land for grazing cattle. One of their victems,
Dorothy Stang, 74, a sister in the Order of Notre Dame de Namur and
defender of the rainforest and local people persecuted by illegal
loggers and landowners, was shot three times on Saturday (12th March
2005) near Anapu, a
rural town about 1,300 miles north of Sao Paulo. She had been
murdered on a settlement which the government was reported to have
granted to peasants but which loggers coveted. Four suspects are
being questioned on the murder which police believe was a contract
killing. Sister Dorothy had previously complained that the
government was not doing enough to stop land-related violence.

Peasants have continued to received death threats from loggers and ranchers.
The government said it planned to protect a huge swathe of the
Amazon. The army have since been called in to patrol areas until
a better solution is arrived at. Nearly four million hectares (10
million acres) in Para state would
become a conservation area in a bid to ward off loggers and
landowners. The Government also wanted to reinforce the
environmental police force.
So the next time you bite into a burger, admired that nice piece of
furniture, or recieved your timber supply for building a house....
check to find out it's origins.
By not creating a market for these illegal products, we are saving not
only the Amazon Rainforest, but it's innocent inhabitants also!

Modern
civilizations are very vulnerable to stormy and unseasonable weather,
we have only to read through the newspapers to see the extent of the
disaster than these extremes in weather patterns can cause.
Millions have faced famine in Africa because of drought, hundreds of
thousands have died in cyclones and floods in Bangladesh, and in
America billions of dollars in damage has been caused by hurricanes and
tornadoes. Heavy snowstorms have brought modern cities to a
standstill, storms sink ships and thunderstorms have destroyed
aircraft.
From 1947 - 1980 the following 10
major types of natural disaster (excluding droughts) have lost
lives
| TYPE OF DISASTER |
DEATHS |
Tropical Cyclones
(Hurricanes, Typhoons) |
499 000 |
| Earthquakes |
450 000 |
Floods (other than
with tropical cyclones) |
194 000 |
| Thunderstorms & Tornadoes |
29 000 |
| Snowstorms |
10 000 |
| Volcanoes |
9 000 |
| Heat-waves |
7 000 |
| Avalanches |
5 000 |
| Landslides |
5 000 |
| Tsunamis |
5 000 |
Many organizations exist around the globe to
deal with Natural Disasters, such as the Federal Emergency
Management Agency (FEMA) in America and The State Emergency Service
(SES) in Australia. In addition to these organizations there also
exists the Red Cross. The Red Cross has been responsible for
aiding victims of natural disasters all around the world.
If you ever find yourself in a similar situation: Stay Calm , Remove Yourself from Danger , and Wait for Help to Arrive.
